There are several legal defenses that can be used by defendants who are accused of negligence. Discuss four of these and provide a hypothetical example of each.

Briefly describe the standard of care to protect others from harm for each of the following liability situations:
Property owners
Owners and operators of automobiles
Governmental units and charitable institutions
Employers and employees
Parents and children
Owners of animals

Martin asks his friend Michael to go to a supermarket and purchase some steaks for dinner. While driving Martin’s car to the supermarket, Michael failed to stop at a red light and seriously injured a pedestrian. Explain who is financially responsible for the injuries to the pedestrian as well as for the damage to Martin’s car.

Locate and describe a liability case that relates to one of the types of liability discussed in #3 above. Be sure to include the key facts about the case, the year and location of the accident, the outcome of the case including any settlement award.
