Through close reading, explain how one of the story/film pairs assigned for this course
either supports or challenges the theory of adaptation expounded in Bluestone’s “The
Limits of the Novel and the Limits of the Film.” Some things to consider are: the concept
of “seeing” in both media, questions of objectivity and subjectivity, points of view, and
the aesthetics of time (particularly chronological time and psychological time.) Although
Bluestone’s essay is considered to be a seminal work, it is dated: do not be afraid to
question or reject Bluestone’s assumptions about the aesthetic limits of literature and
film!
