Select a Third World country to investigate and analyze how poverty has adversely affected lives of its country’s poorest citizens, and determine what steps have been taken by the state to: a) recognize the consequences of people living in poverty; and b) implement the strategies devised to alleviate poverty, and to ascertain whether these strategies have worked to narrow the social divide between the rich and the poor.

The purpose of the research outline is to assist students to focus on a particular topic (issue, institution and country) formulate and organize ideas, and to develop a tentative main argument (thesis statement). You should devote significant time and energy in searching relevant journal articles and then reading them to develop a broad set of questions that you hope to explore in your research. At this stage, students must conduct research and identify (and read!) the main sources that will be used for the essay.
The research outline will consist of the following:
Topic: Identify the topic/title of your research, and provide a very brief introduction (one paragraph).
Tentative Thesis Statement: Indicate in a succinct statement the argument around which you will develop the essay. The thesis statement must be based on your research to date. It should give the reader a clear indication of your main argument.
Outline: Provide a preliminary structure of the essay in point form. It should indicate to the reader the issues that you will cover and the reasoning behind the particular structure of your proposed essay.
Discussion of the THREE most important academic sources in the bibliography: Indicate the following for each of these three sources: What is the main argument? Why is this source useful/relevant for your essay? Be specific and identify the data or arguments from this source that you will use. The discussion of each source should be concise and to the point.
Bibliography: List EIGHT to TEN scholarly sources (NOT the course material) that directly relates to your topic. Include articles from academic journals (newspaper and magazine articles, with some exceptions, do not count), books, book chapters, videos and interviews. Please note that in assessing your research outline, attention ought to be given to the direct relevance of each source to the essay topic.
Questions/Problems: Indicate whether you have any additional questions about the topic, issues that you cannot resolve, additional material you might need, additional help that you might require in order to develop your ideas.
