Your assignment is to choose a topic related to the required text or video lectures we learned in this semester (or at least related to architecture) and finish a 3,000 words minimum paper.
You are encouraged to develop your own BIG idea for the paper. It means you will need to find an original argument on architectural history. An architect (like paper one), a building, a historical event, a book or treatise, a style of architecture, an architecture school…it is a free topic. For example, your paper could explore some of the following issues:
Discuss how the buildings or writings relate to the cultural values and traditions of its time. Is it a representative building or a new innovative structure? What might other previous structures have been a precedent or influence on the design?
Describe the physical context of a key building. What is the character of the surrounding site area? How does the building relate to its context? Is it part of a larger set of building relationships?
Discuss the social significance of the building or literature. What impact might it have on people’s lives? On the lives of architects today? How do various types of people feel about the building? What rituals or cultural events relate to the building or writing?
Choose an architect just a the midterm. What was the architect’s overall philosophy toward architecture? What specific ideas did the architect bring to his work? Who were the architect’s teachers and students?
Detailed Requirements (Important)
Use Arial font, 12 point, double-spaced, with 1” on all margins.
Use Chicago Style 16 footnotes and a bibliography. The footnotes and bibliography do not count toward the 3000-words count. More information on Chicago Style 16 can be accessed at The Chicago Style Manual through the Purdue OWL and at Fairfield University. Please see “Chicago Style 16 Sample Paper Actions ” as an example of what a completed paper should look like in Chicago Style 16.
Use 5 Sources
You are required to use at least five sources total for the 3000-words paper. Information for this paper should come from a variety of sources. You are encouraged to use books, videos, interviews, documentaries and academically recognized scholarly web sources to develop your own “big idea” that will clearly articulate an organized set of ideas about the architect you have chosen. Web sources may be used, but academic journals and publications are more appreciated. Do not use any Wikipedia or commercial sites (like history.com or biography.com) as a source as it is unverifiable and can be edited at any time. To begin your search for scholarly sources, please visit the UF online Library page.
Please include a Bibliography for your sources. Note that the Bibliography format is slightly different from the footnote format, as it is alphabetized by the last name.

The assignment is listed above. I was planning on writing about how Roman architecture helped shape the culture of the era but I am open to other topics.
Other topics we discussed:
Greek, traditional China and Japan, Byzantine, Islamic, Medieval/Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Neo-Classicalism
The most important thing is to not just talk about the topic but to make an argument and support it.
Needs to have Chicago Style 16 footnotes
